Abstract

This study aimed to predict social anxiety based on parenting styles and the quality of peer relationships by examining the mediating role of attachment disorder among lower-secondary school students in Shiraz. This applied study employed a descriptive-correlational design based on structural equation modeling. The statistical population comprised all lower-secondary school students in Shiraz during the 2025–2026 academic year. Using multistage cluster sampling, 250 students were selected, and valid data from 247 participants were analyzed. Data were collected using the Jerabek Social Anxiety Questionnaire, Choo and Chung’s Perceived Peer Relationship Scale, the Randolph Attachment Disorder Questionnaire, and Baumrind’s Parenting Styles Questionnaire. Pearson correlation analysis, path analysis, and bootstrap testing were conducted using SPSS 27 and AMOS. Peer relationship quality was negatively and significantly correlated with social anxiety and attachment disorder, whereas permissive and authoritarian parenting were positively and significantly correlated with both variables. Authoritative parenting was negatively associated with social anxiety and attachment disorder, while attachment disorder was positively associated with social anxiety. The structural model demonstrated an acceptable fit (CMIN/DF=1.74, RMSEA=0.05, CFI=0.99, GFI=0.98). Attachment disorder had a significant positive effect on social anxiety (β=0.52, p<0.001). Bootstrap analysis further indicated significant indirect effects of authoritarian parenting (β=0.07, p=0.04), permissive parenting (β=0.09, p=0.01), authoritative parenting (β=-0.08, p=0.003), and peer relationship quality (β=-0.35, p<0.001) on social anxiety through attachment disorder. Attachment disorder constitutes an important psychological mechanism through which parenting styles and peer relationship quality influence adolescents’ social anxiety. Interventions designed to strengthen secure attachment, promote authoritative parenting practices, and improve supportive peer relationships may therefore contribute to the prevention and reduction of social anxiety among lower-secondary school students.
